It was widely believed and acceptable for individuals to boil catheters in an effort to sterilize them, but the result was a huge uptick in catheter-associated urinary tract infections.
Catheters can be boiled and many patients have done this and still do, although it is cumbersome to boil and re-use your medical supplies and if done incorrectly increases risk of CAUTI.
Ideally, however, a sterile packaged catheter is used each time and properly disposed of.
