There are many ways a catheter can cause injury to a urethra, all of which can cause more serious infections.
1) Failing to fully deflate a Foley balloon before attempting to remove can cause serious damage to the urethra. Likewise, inflating a Foley balloon before fully inserted can cause damage. (It shouldn’t be inflated until urine is flowing through.)
2) Always use ample sterile lubricant when inserting and removing a catheter.
3) Never force a catheter in, or out, of the body.
4) Careful to keep the urethra passage as straight as possible when inserting/removing a catheter. Bends and kinks can cause damage to the soft urethral tissue.
1) Use ample lubricant.
